Lucia Maruska Levendis Scholarship Applications

BACKGROUND

  • American Sokol Washington, DC (Sokol Washington) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in the District of Columbia. This local chapter of the American Sokol was founded in 1947.
  • Sokol Washington is an ethnic, educational, and physical culture organization promoting health and good citizenship of Americans of predominantly Czech and Slovak origin.
  • Sokol Washington supports many community-oriented activities including weekly Czech and Slovak School, gymnastics for youth, adult volleyball, winter ski and summer wilderness camps for families. The annual activities include tennis and volleyball tournaments, bicycling and hiking events, membership appreciation picnic and social gatherings.
  • These Sokol Washington programs continue through our fundraising efforts and the generous financial contributions and personal support of members and friends.
  • As an additional service to the community, Sokol Washington has established a scholarship fund in support of deserving students who assist in the activities of our organization.

ELIGIBILITY

The scholarship eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • The Scholarship is available to applicants who are college-bound seniors
    or college freshmen, sophomores or juniors.
  • The applicant must have participated, or currently must be participating in
    Sokol Washington programs.
  • The applicant’s parents or the applicant (if over 18) must be a Sokol
    Washington member in good standing.
  • The applicant must have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • The applicant must have demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship
    attributes through participation in a range of community and scholastic
    activities.
  • If awarded, the Scholarship funds will be paid in the name of the recipient
    directly to the college of enrollment.
  • A student who receives a full scholarship from another source is not eligible for the Scholarship.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP

  • Submit a completed application form.
  • Submit transcripts that include grades and GPA for the applicant’s
    last two semesters in school.
  • Attach 2 letters of recommendation: one from a teacher, coach or
    extracurricular activity sponsor; and one from a Sokol Washington
    member (not a relative).
  • Attach a typed, one page essay (300 to 500 words) on the topic:
    “How my participation in Sokol influences my life, education and career
    plans.”

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the American Sokol Washington, DC
Scholarship Program are to:

  • Provide financial support to students who have assisted regularly with
    Sokol Washington activities;
  • Promote the principles of community service.
